Going Electric

So, you think you are a toothbrushing superstar?  I thought the same thing until a representative from Oral-B came into my college years ago to demo their rechargeable battery operated toothbrushes.  The first time I used it, I’ll admit my gums were a tad tender but the next day, it dawned on me that my regular toothbrush just hadn’t been doing me a favor.

The reason? My manual toothbrush didn’t have a timer.  Seriously, it did get around all the weird nooks and crannies of my mouth but the thing that kept me from brushing well enough was always being in a hurry. It’s much too easy to bush a little here and there until things feel better.  Most electric toothbrushes nowadays have a two minute timer with a pause every thirty seconds letting you know when to move onto the next section of your mouth.

Now let me be fair.  Even though my favorite electric toothbrush is the Oral B, it’s really personal preference.  Both the Oral B and Sonicare have shown to be head to head in consumer reports and either one will do a great job of helping you spend more time on the task at hand.  I find that most of my patients that go from a manual toothbrush to any electric not only show less plaque and tartar at their next visit, but they consistently feel like they are doing a better job brushing.
